Building A Design Portfolio With Briefbox

Today I want to talk a little bit about Briefbox. This is a website I discovered about a year ago offering project briefs for designers to work on. You don’t get anything for doing them, but they are good to do in spare time or if you want to build your design skills. I’ve actually recommended this site to a few of my classmates as a way to continue building their portfolio. ABOUT BRIEFBOX Briefbox is a website started by a group of designers. It offers design and illustration briefs which can help designers work on their skills and build a portfolio. The real advantage of using Briefbox is that…

Chronic Illness & Coursework | Art School Diary #4

This week I became what I would describe as a proper university student. That was because instead of doing coursework I choose to play the Playstation for two days. I did have what I would consider a good reason for doing this. But if I’m honest I would still rather be playing the Playstation than writing this. CHRONIC ILLNESS PROBLEMS On Monday my Chronic Fatigue got pretty bad, pretty quick. I was fine over lunch but by 3 o’clock I had no energy and decided to just go home. It’s annoying because there wasn’t really a reason for my CFS getting bad. The week before had been pretty stressful but…

The Lives Of Others | Art School Diary #3

I’ve had a bit of a down week, as you will be able to see. A few stressful life events have meant I got anxious about uni. Which in turn made me question if I really should be doing what I am. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom. I’ve been joining a few design-related groups and getting inducted into various workshops and I found out I might be going to Amsterdam. THE LIVES OF OTHERS The first project at university was all about creating a film poster. Now, this is something I’ve done a number of times before. But I don’t get to choose the film this time. Which…

Visiting London Graphics Centre | Art Supply Haul

I was in London over the summer and while there I visited the London Graphics Centre. This is one of my all-time favourite art shops. So I wanted to share more about it and also what I bought while I was there. ABOUT LONDON GRAPHICS London Graphics Centre is just a few minutes walk away from Covent Garden tube station. It’s actually on the same corner as the stage door for the Cambridge Theatre. So if you want to meet the actors in Matilda and buy art supplies at the same time this is the place to go. The actual store is huge and split over two levels. The bottom…

Project Briefs & Lectures | Art School Diary #2

Week 1 of university was an easy introduction. I got my first brief and went to my first lecture. I really thought the whole experience was going to be something new. I’m quite surprised to say its very similar to what I was doing at college. PROJECT BRIEF At the start of the week, I got my first project brief. I don’t really know what I expected. Maybe because its university I was expecting something harder. But the first brief is almost exactly like the briefs I worked on at college. They aren’t just similar, the wording in some parts is exactly the same. I’m feeling a lot more confident…
