Are Hogwarts Acceptance Letters Historically Accurate?

Something which has never quite made sense about the Harry Potter universe is their rejection of muggle technology. JK Rowling makes it quite clear that Arthur Weasley is seen as an odd-ball because of his interest in all things muggle. In fact, the Wizarding World seems to be stuck in the Middle Ages in several different ways. You could argue that there is no need for electricity or modern transportation methods when you have a magic wand that lets you do almost anything. In some cases, the “muggle world” moved on from these older technologies for very good reasons. Today I want to take a look at the writing system…

A Christmas Gift Guide For Stationery Lovers

It’s almost Christmas so I thought I would do a gift guide where I share some of the best stationery items to give as presents. I may have stretched the definition of ‘stationery’ for a few of these items. But I wanted to mention related items which could make good gifts for someone who likes stationery.  If you’re wanting to avoid online shopping this year I would highly recommend you take a look in Paperchase and Cass Art. Local farm shops also seem to be good for stocking interesting stationery items which you don’t normally find on the high street.  The items I’ve mentioned in this post are just what…

A Day Trip To London To See Lazarus

Way back at the start of December my Dad and I took a quick trip to London to see Lazarus. The new musical written by David Bowie before he died. Here is what happened. We started off the day by getting the first train from Edinburgh to London. I wouldn’t really recommend this but it worked out that getting the train there and home on the same day was cheaper than getting a hotel. With most musicals this would have been totally impossible but Lazarus is in Kings Cross theatre (just next to the station) and it’s much shorter than typical musical. BRITISH LIBRARY We got to London for around…

Don’t Read Harry Potter and The Cursed Child

I had intended this to be a review of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child script book but I can’t do it. I know a lot of people who have only read the script didn’t like it and I think I know the reason why. Reading the script is nothing like actually seeing the play. It’s sort of similar to how you can’t really enjoy a musical soundtrack until you’ve actually seen the musical because it misses out on so much of the context. I realise you get the stage directions in the book (which are really weird by the way, this must be the only script to make…
