The Ultimate Harry Potter Gift Guide

That time of year is coming up very soon where you have to buy lots of presents for people you may only vaguely know. Today I have a rundown of the best things to buy the Harry Potter fan in your life. New editions of the Potter books are great but the story doesn’t actually change. So here are a few things I’m sure any Potter fan would love. The Ultimate Harry Potter Gift Guide HARRY POTTER BOOKS I know I just said there is more interesting Harry Potter memorabilia to be found than books but let’s start with the obvious. Since Harry Potter first came out in the 90s…

Beauty and the Beast | MinaLima Classic

So remember back in August I wrote about the MinaLima editions of Peter Pan and Jungle Book, at the time I said I would literally buy every book MinaLima released. Well two days ago I found out MinaLima had released a new edition of The Beauty and the Beast (I presume to go along with the movie), any way I found out about it and immediately bought it. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST The thing I’ve been learning a lot about in class just now is how to use design to make something feel expensive. Good design can turn something normal into a premium product. Graphic Design Festival Scotland 2016

I am very late in posting this. Every September/ October time Graphic Design Festival Scotland holds a poster design competition. You don’t have to create a poster on a specific thing, you just create a poster. The best posters are then shown in an exhibition at The Lighthouse in Glasgow. Here are the photos from the second year I went (from last September). Like I said I should have posted about this a long time ago. THE POSTER EXHIBITION I feel weird saying this but this exhibition wasn’t actually that good. The posters don’t have a specific theme which means it can be very overwhelming. Some were interesting to look…

Book Review | Disney’s Art of Moana

I’ve been meaning to buy some of the Disney ‘art of’ books for a long time. If I had the money I would by every single Pixar one ever made (along with the one about colour scripts (it’s so pretty)). After seeing Moana I knew I had to buy Disney’s Art of Moana. I loved the movie so much, and the animation was fantastic. You can really see how much the studio has improved with doing water. DISNEY’S ART OF MOANA The one thing I liked about this book is that it had 2D renderings and concept art. Which is really nice to look at. It gives you an idea of what…

Alan Kitching | A Life In Letterpress

Back at the end of 2016 I went to the Lighthouse in Glasgow to see an exhibit of Alan Kitching’s work. Alan Kitching is a typographic designer, he creates artwork by using a type of relief printing called letterpress. This is where you have a block of type (or in this particular case specific letterforms) and print them onto paper using ink. It’s actually really interesting to see his work up close because there are imperfections in it. LETTERPRESS PRINTING Printing as a whole is not an exact science and doesn’t always work the way you expect. I really like his work but I think part of that comes from it…
