Risograph Printing & CFS Problems | Art School Diary #9

This week I had a few really exciting workshops to attend. We were getting an introduction to risograph printing as well as a workshop on bookbinding. Both are going to be quite useful for the project we’ve just started. I was really excited about these workshops so of course, my chronic fatigue had to come along and ruin the fun. RISOGRAPH PRINTING I love risograph printing but I’ve never been able to give it a try. I actually talk about it quite often here, Ohh Deer does little riso printed calendars in each Papergang box. Risograph is a type of printer but is more like screen printing than digital printing.…

Under Camera Artwork | Art School Diary #5

This was a pretty easy going week. I got to try out a few of the workshops the art school has available. As well as finishing my model and learning more about the process of designing for the student magazine. UNDER CAMERA ARTWORK Last week I finished my model. Etching the design into acrylic using the laser cutters. This week I got my hands on a strip of LED lights to finish off my model. So with acrylic, you can shine light into the plastic. Any etched parts of the acrylic will light up when a light is passed through. I bought a cheap set of LED lights on Amazon…

    Celebrating David Bowie Using Typography

Today I am going to share the process I went through while working on my final project for college. This course didn’t have any exams, so my final mark was totally dependent on this project. There was a number to choose from but when I found out one particular project was to “celebrate the songs of David Bowie using typography” I knew I had to do it. I’ve been a fan of David Bowie since I was a child. I still have a copy of that Best of Bowie CD from 2002 so my dad must have introduced me to it around then. Already being a fan of Bowie made…

    Inside My Graphic Design Sketchbooks

I love the creative process. I love seeing the stages an artist goes through when creating a piece of work. All artists go through this to some extent. I love this process so much I thought I would share some of my graphic design sketchbooks where you can see some of my own creative process I’ve been studying graphic design for over two years now which means I have a lot of sketchbooks (over 20). The process remains the same with graphic design but there isn’t so much ‘artistic’ stuff in my sketchbooks. A huge part of graphic design is working with type and grids. This means while I have…

4 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Attend Art School

A few weeks ago I wrote about all of the advantages of attending art school. In that post I mentioned there were a few bad things about studying an art course so today I will be sharing all the reasons why you shouldn’t go to art school. PRACTICE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ART SCHOOL The one big argument out there about art schools is you don’t really need to do a course to learn art. For the most part that is true. All modern art courses work by teaching you fundamental basics which you practise while working on different projects. These are things like analytical drawing, colour theory, typography. You…
