4 Harry Potter Fanfics You Need To Read

A few months ago I wrote about some of the cool things the Harry Potter fandom has created. The one thing I found most fascinating from that was the fanfiction writers. In 2007 a study showed that ‘Harry Potter’ was the most searched for fanfiction subject online. As of December 2014 there is over 702,000 stories on fanfiction.net alone devoted to Harry Potter. Then there are the many websites solely devoted to Harry Potter fanfiction.

I think the thing I enjoy most about Harry Potter fanfiction is the speculation. How could the series have been different if a few small things were changed. Then we have the fact that I find the whole act of writing a fanfic incredible. These authors spend countless hours writing stories without being paid, all because they love a book series. Anyway here are just a few of the Harry Potter fanfictions I think everyone should read.

Considering the number of 18+ rated Harry Potter fanfics I should point out that these particular works are suitable for all ages.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky. This is an alternate universe fanfic where Petunia Evans marries a biochemistry professor rather than Vernon Dursley. As such Harry grows up in a loving and caring home. When he finds out he is a wizard he tries to apply scientific principles to his study of magic.

This fanfiction is notable as it is currently the most reviewed Harry Potter fanfiction on fanfiction.net however has also caused controversy with the author asking for donations for faster updates.

Harry Potter and the Battles of Will by Jocelyn. In the run up to the release of the Half Blood Prince most of the Harry Potter fandom devoted their time to speculating and debating the plot and character developments. As such there were a number of theories and rumors (some released by JK Rowling herself) as to what would occur in the book. This particular fanfiction author took all of those ideas and wrote a story which would incorporate them all.

The story starts out with Snape blowing his cover to rescue Harry from Voldemort, it then goes on to show how their relationship changes and you see Harry and Snape grow closer, almost becoming friends.

Resonance by GreenGecko. This story is told in 3 parts. In all it totals over 1.7 million words (thats more than the entire Harry Potter series put together). The first part starts with Harry defeating Voldemort and then being adopted by Snape. The second part takes place after Harry graduates Hogwarts and shows him starting his training to become an auror. The third part deals with some of the new powers Harry gained from defeating Voldemort. Throughout the series we also get to see Professor Snape grow and deal with some of the problems that comes from being a parent to The Boy Who Lived.

James Potter and the Hall of Elder’s Crossing by G. Normal Lippert. This is an unofficial continuation of the Harry Potter series. The novel is set 18 years after Deathly Hallows and describes the adventures of Harry’s son, James Potter, during his first year at Hogwarts.

After threatening Lippert with legal action for violating her intellectual property rights by producing and publishing the novel, Rowling dismissed the threat after being offered an advanced copy of the novel and stated that she supported it and others like it.

Thanks for reading.
