I may not have mentioned this before but I am a tad obsessed with the graphic design work from the Harry Potter movies. An exhibition of the graphic design work from the Potter movies recently opened in London and it is possibly my new favourite place. It’s called the House of MinaLima. Named after Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima who were the graphic designers that worked on the Harry Potter movies.

THE HOUSE OF MINALIMA

The House of MinaLima is free to get into and right behind the Palace Theatre. So if you’re down in London seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child you have no reason not to visit. The exhibition is split over four tiny floors. It’s the exact sort of building you would expect from the Harry Potter universe. The floors are very small with one staircase connecting them all. In fact the building is so small there is usually a queue to get in.

The top two floors are dedicated to design work from Harry Potter. Here you can see the designs for the famous wanted posters. As well as little knick-knacks found throughout the Potter universe. The textbook cover designs are particularly interesting. Then there is a floor displaying some MinaLima work which is not related to the Potter universe. When I was visiting this was a display of prints from A Compendium of Collective Nouns.

The very bottom floor houses a shop selling unique Harry Potter merchandise. Here you can buy notebooks which look like jotters and textbooks from the Potter universe. You can also buy official MinaLima prints featuring designs they created for Harry Potter. These prints can get quite expensive but they are great to buy as a gift. There are also copies of the illustrated children’s classics which MinaLima created in collaboration with Harper Design. Beauty and the Beast is a particular favourite of mine.

FINALLY

The House of MinaLima is open till at least February 2017 and is a must visit if you’re in the area. If you can’t make it to London and want some unique Potter merchandise there is also an online store.
